Since my son started using BeeStar online math, he often asks questions about math problems. They are more and more challenging to me. This book came in as a big help. Its friendly question and answer format makes it very easy to use. The answers are insightful and presented in an elegant and simple manner that makes otherwise hard-to-explain concepts easy. It not only teaches the conventional math, but also gives you the context and the thoughts behind the principles. My son's math sense is improved significantly since I used this invaluable book. We love it.
I bought Ready for Algebra because we're homeschooling and I have trouble with math. I'm an older-than-usual mom and it's been 40 years since I had algebra, so I need help. Frankly, I got this book for myself. The cartoons, the simple explanations, and the blessings of an index and glossary are helping pave the way for me as I work alongside my daughter in math. Now I'll understand what she's asking and not have to call our mentor math mom all the time. :)
Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra contains answers to some pithy questions. What is algebra? The answer starts out: Algebra is like arithmetic, but in algebra some of the numbers have names instead of values. As another example, It makes no sense to me why someone would replace a number with a letter signed Carissa. The answer is in part Youre doing something a little like algebra whenever you use a pronoun. You could have written this: It makes no sense to Carissa why someone would replace a number with a letterOr how about: An algebraic expression is like a word or phrase, and an equation is like a sentence.A successful textbook is easy to TEACH from because it has lots of exercises, and plenty of extra padding in case there isnt quite enough useful content to fill the entire semester. Reading a successful textbook is often like eating sawdust. In contrast, Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra is easy to LEARN from. It is not necessary to read it cover to cover. Instead, I heartily recommend that you keep this book in your medicine cabinet, secure in the knowledge that if your pre-teen comes home with a questions about pre-algebra, you wont be left with a splitting headache.
This book is "Excellent! It breaks down the information to grammar school level. What more can I say. One has to practice a lot of problems for it to Stick in your head." The same for the other book, "Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra, which should be read First, and take notes [regardless of the fact that you now own the book, Take Notes].Arivle L. Griffin
I think the book is okay but not worth the money I spent. I did learn a couple pointers to help with algebra. However, I expected the book to be filled with great tips, shortcuts and lots of problems to practice my new found knowledge with breakdown answer guide. This book did not get me ready for algebra and would have made me run from pre-algebra except I did have incredible instructor for pre-algebra prior to reading this book. I recommend you find different book to ready you for algebra.
As I explained on the intro to Geometry book- the content is good, but I was hoping for something a little more cartooney. I've found the book helpful to me so that I can better explain things to my daughter who is struggling in math. She finds the books a little dry and uninteresting- but that's her. I think getting Math information is pretty subjective, and from a teaching and information perspective I find the content very helpful, and will purchase the others in the series.
The Math Forum does some amazing work and this book is a great example. Wonderfully illustrated and written. What I particularly liked were the examples that supported everything from Rote learners to pure concept learners and several in between. A must for teachers everywhere.
I was looking for something that would help my ESE students comprehend algebra in a different way. This book is nearly as tedious as the textbook, with very few different approaches to solving the problems than those presented in the textbook. We stayed with the textbook version.
